This program has two parts. One side supports businesses digitize. The other provides digital marketing education to students and grows them into E-commerce Advisors. These students turned Advisors are connected to businesses in the program and will apply what they’ve learned to help them grow online.

Alacrity and GYBO will also support E-commerce Advisor, and will hire, train, mentor, and deploy students as E-commerce Advisor to support participating small BC businesses that require guidance to build their e-commerce and digital capabilities.

The students will act as e-commerce advisor to small businesses who are also a part of the GYBO Program. Student’s will help those who require guidance to build their e-commerce and digital capabilities.

What Training Will I Recieve?

The E-commerce Advisory Bootcamp is an overview course built for early-stage entrepreneurs, like yourself, looking to understand the fundamentals of E-commerce so you can begin your journey of building a digital-based company.

Within the course, you will be guided through the beginning stages of ideation, validating your business model, understanding the competitive landscape, to choosing your platform and systems involved in running an online storefront. Upon completion, you should have a grasp of the ecosystem, systems, and competencies required in operating a successful eCommerce store.

You will also learn about the Grow Your Business Online Program, the objectives of the program, eligibility requirements for businesses, eligible activities and eligible & ineligible cost and develop communication skills.

What Are The Expectations of the Program?

  • Be available between 20 to 40 hours per week for a maximum of 340 hours. Special arrangements are made for co-op students.
  • Complete the self-led training program (20 hours) with a minimum score of 80%.
  • Work with assigned businesses to review their current digital strategy, gather requirements and provide a written recommendation.
  • Assist in the implementation or improvement of digital technologies.
  • Complete required reporting weekly and at the end of each assignment.

 

Eligibility Requirements

E-commerce Advisor applicants who have graduated from high school and are planning on pursuing a post-secondary education; or currently pursuing post-secondary education; or has recently graduated from a post-secondary institution, must meet all the following eligibility criteria:

 Where do I apply? 

Alacrity Canada acts as an intermediary for GYOB Program on behalf of the Canadian Government. Should you apply through us, we’ll be leading you through your studies.

Step 1.

Complete the online application demonstrating that you meet the eligibility criteria for E-Commerce Advisors.

Step 2

Alacrity Canada will review submitted and complete applications against eligibility criteria. Applicants will be contacted within 2 weeks with an update of their application.

Step 3

Students that meet the eligibility criteria will be conditionally approved to the program. They will be contacted with a letter of employment and will also be asked to provide further onboarding documentation demonstrating eligibility requirements, complete a background check, and return necessary tax documentation to proceed with employment by Alacrity Canada.

Step 4

At final approval, an employee agreement will be issued to the applicant by Alacrity Canada for signatures.

Step 5

Once onboarding has been completed, E-Commerce Advisors will complete a training program through Alacrity Canada to learn the necessary e-commerce and digital marketing skills required to support small businesses through a work placement.

Step 6

Students will be assigned by the Alacrity Liaison to work directly with small businesses to assist them with their digital technology adoption.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will there be an interview before I start?

Because this is a government-funded grant program, provided you meet the requirements, we will not be interviewing you before you receive a contract.

Will I get paid during the training and for the Advisor duties?

Yes, E-Commerce Advisors will be employed by Alacrity Canada at $20 per hour, for the duration of the training and the placement with any businesses up to the maximum work hours covered by the grant.

What training will I receive to become an E-Commerce Advisor?
  • Understand the Grow Your Business Online Program, objectives of the program, eligibility requirements for businesses, eligible activities and eligible & ineligible cost
    • Learn the capabilities of several e-commerce solutions and related tools: pros and cons of each solution and when one solution may be better than another, etc.
        • Develop communication skills
        • Determine individual business needs and values
        How much time will the training take?

        The training is self-directed and includes about 20 hours of content. 

        Will I work 40h per week?

        If you have chosen to work full time we will thrive to provide close to 40h per week but full-time work can not be guaranteed 

        Do I have to work Monday - Friday 8-4?

        While our office hours are Monday to Friday 8 am – 4 pm, your work hours are quite flexible.
        You will have to be available during these times for any scheduled meetings and to connect with the businesses at a time they are able to meet.
        Outside of that, you choose the times you need to work on your projects. 

        I am applying as a CoOp student, will I get enough hours?

        We will adjust the total hours to meet the requirements for your CoOp program.

        Do I receive a certificate at the completion of the course?

        Yes, participants who complete the course requirements will receive a Certificate of Completion.

        I already have e-Commerce and digital marketing training or experience, do I still have to complete the training?

        Yes, you will still complete the online training but you might be able to move faster than someone new to the subject.

        How many businesses am I expected to work with after training is completed?

        Depending on the time spent with each business you work with until your maximum hours for the grant have been exhausted, on average between 8 – 10 businesses.

        What will the business owner expect from an E-Commerce Advisor?

        E-Commerce Advisors will be available, at no cost to the business, to review current digital strategy, review requirements and provide a recommendation on strategies for digital marketing, social media, SEO, paid advertising, and analytics to help you determine the best options for the business.

        Where are the businesses located and how do we connect?

        Businesses can be located anywhere in B.C.. Communication with the business will be via an email account that will be setup for you when you start your training. Voice or video meetings will be held via Google Meets.

        Will I meet with the business owner in person?

        All meetings should be virtual using the tools provided.

        How much time will an E-Commerce Advisor spend with each business?

        On average about 30 hours per business, this time will be spent on assessment, recommendation and some implementation of the solutions.

        What support is available?

        You will have access to a dedicated Liason that will facilitate the connection with the assigned businesses. You also have access to an eCommerce expert for questions.

        • Desktop or laptop able to run recent versions of the operating system (Windows, MacOS) and productivity/ communication and collaboration software needed
